The EN 360 standard specifies the requirements, test methods, instructions for use and marking for retractable type fall arresters. This type of variable-length fall arrest devices is connected between a fixed point and the harness, and is characterised by a self-locking function and an automatic tensioning and return facility for the lanyard.
They are used in conjunction with other components to make up a fall arrest system. However, if both the retractable device and the lanyard are without the energy absorber, they cannot be used for that purpose but only as a connection. Because the “retractable type fall arrester” is a component always connected to the restraint system and, as a whole, has the task of supporting the whole body of a person and to restrain the wearer during a fall and after the arrest of a fall. They automatically modify the length of the connection lanyard and block any movement that exceeds: 1,5 m/s and are generally provided with an energy dissipation system consisting of an internal friction that acts on the cable to provide a braking force lower than 6 kN. For dynamic performance, the arrest distance must not exceed 2 m.
